"Aqualung" seems to feel the sheriff no longer subscribes to this theory -- yet I have seen nothing new or different anywhere ... so ... as I've asked before...if anyone knows of something we've missed, any updates will be appreciated

7/18/04 Al--Anon Message #2197
"Has the sheriff's dept. had anything new to say about Josh's case in recent months? Even in the last year?" --> Most recent statement: "June 20, 2004 ... Stearns County authorities have said it's most likely that Guimond either fell into one of the lakes on the St. John's campus or is in a low-lying area. But several searches, including one by an underwater-search team, have failed. Brian Guimond has been critical of the search and believes his son was abducted and taken from campus... School officials accuse him of harassing his son's classmates and campus security workers." (Associated Press, with reporting by David Unze, St. Cloud Times) ..... Statement one year after Josh evaporated: "The prevailing theory continues to be that Josh got himself into some kind of low-lying area on campus. He’s either in a body of water or a muddy, swampy area, (Sheriff) Sanner speculated." (David Unze, St. Cloud Times, Nov. 9, 2003)

Good post, Anonymous. A couple month's back, Josh's Mom posted a message in which she said she had not received much in the way of communication from the sheriff's dept. To me she sounded discouraged about the lack of communication. Does the sheriff's dept. not have any new information, or is it that they don't want to discuss the info they do have...no one knows...so people are left to speculate...and you know how it goes, people make judgements based upon what they can see and hear. Let's face it, has the sheriff's dept. had anything new to say about Josh's case in recent months? Even in the last year? Anyone out there who knows of something along those lines, I hope you will update the rest of us. Thanks!

The Stearns county Sheriff will stand for re-election in Nov,2006. I don't live in the county and have no axe to grind. There seems to be a lingering question about the efforts of the dept. The std answer is, "we can't comment about an ongoing investigation". That doesn't seem to be the question. The question seems to be, what obstacles are standing in the way of the investigation? Maybe the re-election campaign should be started early with questions to all the likely candidates. He is a public servant. But, at the end of the day, let's not forget he may be truly doing all he can and he may be getting no cooperation. Sounds like you need to know! A long tough election cycle may be needed.

7/17/04 -- Message #2192
Anonymous, it is very sad -- and so unfair to all the victims. No priest or church that I know of has ever voluntarily stepped forward to admit sexually abusing a victim(s). It seems that the victims have to fight like hell to get justice. But what happens when the victims can no longer speak for themselves? It leaves their friends and family members to take up the fight -- and not give up until the answers are uncovered. We cannot expect St. John's to voluntarily come forward with anything that might incriminate the university -- business is business...alas. Tis a cold and unjust world we live in at times...and many a time those with the most power abuse it. By the way, I am not making any accusations against St. John's. I'm just saying I don't feel they've been very forthcoming in this case, nor very helpful. It appears St. John's just wishes everyone would forget about it and move on. But we won't -- ever

7/17/04 Anonymous Message #2191
This conversation is all very sad. I believe it's fueled in part by the cover-ups laid bare in the priests' sex scandal that is currently devastating many diocese in this country. Hundreds of millions of dollars and untold pain because of an arrogant coverup. Are we heading to another scandal beyond juvenile victims? Let's hope not! But the church leaders are now not above suspicion. Has anything been learned by the juvenile victims scandal? A little openness would go a long way on the St. John's/ Joshua issue. Let's all pray St. John's will be cleared. But, those at the reins sure have a funny way of getting to that end. Isn't it time for a Bishop or an Abbot to come to the podium and level with all those who are hurting and speculating? If they are under a gag order, then at least say that!

"However, according to a source, there are indications that one or more individuals may have been sent to a treatment center since Josh’s disappearance, allegedly without notification of law enforcement authorities, as specified in the policies and agreed to in previous settlements. This may be what Tom was trying to alert us to in his post of 4/9/2004, 7:16:21 PM on this message board. I understand local and national media are investigating." Bingo!!!

7/17/04 _anonymous_ Message #2186
"Now the question: does law enforcement have the same access to these men as they would in the rest of society? Yes ___ No____ Let's have a real discussion on that question!" The answer seems to be a qualified No. As reported in the Star Tribune (May 5, 2002, http://www.startribune.com/stories/462/2719831.html): "Under the program at St. John's, any allegation is investigated by the abbot. If it involves a minor or legally vulnerable adult such as a nursing-home resident, law-enforcement authorities are notified." However, according to a source, there are indications that one or more individuals may have been sent to a treatment center since Josh’s disappearance, allegedly without notification of law enforcement authorities, as specified in the policies and agreed to in previous settlements. This may be what Tom was trying to alert us to in his post of 4/9/2004, 7:16:21 PM on this message board. I understand local and national media are investigating.

7/17/04 Anonymous Message #2185
But, but, but, the basic question is being avoided! There was a known quantity of men sent to St. John's and other similar settings because they could no longer be trusted in their previous settings. They were isolated because of real or alledged sex offenses. Now the question: does law enforcement have the same access to these men as they would in the rest of society? Yes ___ No____ Let's have a real discussion on that question!

The Webmaster is correct that information about suspects "should be submitted to Joshua’s family and Law Enforcement." The number for the Sheriff's Department is (320) 251-4240. The email for Josh’s family is info@findjoshua.com. I also applaud Anonymous’ persistence in drawing attention to suspicious behavior. This is exactly what is needed to solve the case. The point is, information should be conveyed to authorities with powers to investigate. A viable suspect would most likely be an older male, will have had an opportunity to cross paths with Josh in his daily routine, feel most comfortable in that particular kind of environment (as opposed to, say, a truck stop or gay bar in the area), and can freely move around at night and on weekends in the vicinity where Josh disappeared without drawing attention to himself. Furthermore, the guilty party would have a history of making unwanted advances toward male students or having inappropriate relationships with them. Please report!

7/16/04 -- Message #2183
I get the feeling that the "ties" between St. John's and Stearn's County Sheriff's Dept. run deep -- they seem to have a long history. Some "theoretical questions:" is someone in fact standing in the way?; could it be there is a cover up of some kind going on?; is someone perhaps being protected?; how many layers might have to be uncovered to get to the truth?; is there anyone who has enough power and persistence to get to the truth? ... any thoughts out there? Someone...anyone?

7/16/04 -- Message #2182
Well, I think it might be a bit difficult for authorities to have access to all the records and information they might need, let's say, theoretically, if they were investigating possible suspects associated with St. John's. And, some of the possible suspects may have gone on "sabbaticals" -- possibly overseas! -- so you see, it can get complicated -- but not impossible, if you really want to find the truth, and you're not afraid, and you're willing to keep trying

7/16/04 Anonymous Message #2181
The saga has come full-circle, leaving the same open question. Does law enforcement have access to all they might believe are suspects, or not? If not, who or what is standing in the way? A cover-up always makes the eventual outcome worse!

7/16/04 Webmaster Message #2180
There are several reasons why this rule is important. Not the least of which is the ''innocent until proven guilty'' idea. One other reason is that if you do have proof about an individual, it should be submitted to Joshua’s family and Law Enforcement in such a way as to allow them to act on that information. Let’s say, for sake of argument, that the posting that was submitted did have some valid input, but the person you accused (who also reads this message board) was then able to take action to hide him/her self or important evidence. Suddenly, this well meaning message has just ruined a long investigation by those folks who do have the right to accuse someone (law enforcement). Mr/Mrs Anonymous can hide behind their anonymous signature, the person you may have falsely accused can not. Please send comments regarding individuals direct to Joshua’s family via the contact us page. They will act on them appropriately!

7/15/04 Anonymous Message #2176
It seems there are a few basic questions -- I don't know which have been answered. 1) do you have the names of the sex offenders who were sheltered at St. John's when Josh disappeared? 2) do you know their abuse history? 3) Have any of these abusers been questioned by the investigators? 4)Do you know the location of these people at this time. 5) Have you considered peaceful protests to shine a light on the situation? 6) I assume the sheriff is elected -- have you shined a light on the sheriff in the election process -- if not, why not? Student power can be a very powerful force for change -- do it! Do it for the good priests who are suffering more than any as they are painted with same brush!

7/14/04 -- Message #2175
Yeah okay, Randy -- I stand corrected --this situation is like a 7 ton elephant standing in a room and no one can see it ... well, except...some of us can see the darn thing!

7/14/04 Randy Message #2174
-- ..... The elephant in the room is more like 7 tons, or 14,000 lbs.

7/14/04 -- Message #2173
Anonymous -- all along, there have been many of us who have shared your thought -- it's like the old adage about a 700 lb elephant standing in the middle of the room, but nobody "sees" it. But remember, the Catholic church has two things many folks don't: the first is money and the second is power. This makes pursuing certain leads very daunting. That's why it's going to take courage and perseverence to solve this case. Joshua, we will never give up on finding you, we will neither abandon nor forget you...ever

7/14/04 Anonymous Message #2172
Is there a significant issue missing in the entire dialogue about the priest sex scandal? The church, locally and the Vatican, have framed the issue as abuse of "juveniles". I've heard litle or no challenge to this assertion. With hundreds or maybe thousands of offenders, it it not probable that among them is someone who has attempted or succeeded in abducting a Joseph or a Joshua? How many of these folks would be level 2 0r 3 sex offenders, required to register every move they made if they were not being protected because they were "once" a priest?

7/14/04 -- Message #2171
Aubs, of course you are right. I never believed that theory, and I don't think Josh's family ever did either. I've always thought he was stalked by someone who was at least casually acquainted with Josh in some way. I think this person was able to lure Josh and then abduct him. We can only hope and pray that the authorities investigating this case have been diligently pursuing all the leads given them, no matter where those leads take them. But I still think it will be Josh's family and friends who ultimately find the truth - because - they are the ones who have the biggest motivation to do so -- out of love for someone who can no longer speak for himself

On a scale of 0-10, how logical is it to believe that Josh stumbled into a campus lake *on foot*, yet remain missing after 20 months and numerous searches by local dive teams and the renowned Trident Foundation? Item: On Wednesday, June 7, 41-year-old Jeffrey McCormick of Chicago left Wiley Point Resort on Lake of the Woods around 7:00 p.m. A short while later, his boat was seen running in circles. Divers found his body two days later on Friday, July 9. (Source: Kenora Miner and News, 7/12/04) .... Item: On Friday, June 9, 82-year-old Robert Ward O'Brien of Minneapolis failed to return after paddling a canoe on Lake Beltrami near Bemidji. Divers recovered his body two days later on Sunday, June 11, after spotting it with an underwater camera. (Source: AP, 7/12/04) .... Item: On Monday, June 12, 49-year-old Bruce Allen Schneider of Duluth drowned in the St. Louis River near the public fishing dock. Divers recovered his body the same day in 12 feet of water. I'm sure the letter was well written and I hope it draws more attention to Josh's case

Katie has written a very good letter that appears in today's St. Cloud Times. Read it at www.sctimes.com or http://www.perjuries.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?p=88098#88098 (scroll down to the bottom of the page). Katie effectively points out the problems with the theory that Josh is in the water. She also notes the problems that this theory, the only one law enforcement has publicly embraced, poses for those who wish to continue searching for Josh.

7/9/04 -- Message #2161
Several months ago, someone left a very intriguing message here that contained a series of questions about this case...all the questions pointed to pursuing an investigation into individuals connected with St. John's. If I had the money, I would hire the best investigator out there and give him or her a mission -- follow the trail in this case no matter where it goes -- and get the truth. I thought I heard, maybe it was on here, that the sheriff isn't holding onto the "Josh is in the water somewhere on campus" theory anymore. I sure hope that's true

"What is it, exactly, that causes the Stearns County Sheriff's Dept. to refrain from thoroughly investigating any involvement..." My understanding is that the Sheriff’s Dept. IS actively investigating and that NO individual or entity is immune from scrutiny. Obviously, this is a tough case with many ramifications. According to a source, an area near the cabin referred to by "Anonymous" was searched by cadaver dogs the spring after Josh went missing. This is also a good time to remind the public of Kevin Jay Ayotte, a toddler who disappeared from that general area on Sept. 30, 1982. Kevin was last seen playing with his younger brother in the family's summer home in Sugarbush Township. Their mom went outside briefly and when she returned, Kevin was gone. Authorities believe an unknown person entered the home and abducted the boy while his mother was outside. Please call the Beltrami County Sheriff's Department at (218) 751-9111 if you have any information.

"She didn't tell her parents. But after Ed Vessel's son tried to commit suicide in 1978, allegations that the son had been abused by Eckroth surfaced, Ed Vessel said. Now 63, he said he immediately took his concerns to social workers and doctors, asking them to tell the Stearns County sheriff. He also said he talked to a retired abbot at the time and several years later went to the sheriff. He said his questions went unanswered." It begs the question, again and again: what is it, exactly, that causes the Stearns County Sheriff's Dept. to refrain from thoroughly investigating any involvement St. John's University might possibly have with the disappearance of Joshua Guimond ... what could it be...fear? money? cover ups? what?????   Does anyone know of any Minnesota drowning victims that were not recovered? These two Leech Lake fatalities were recovered in less than 2 days, in the state’s third-largest, fifth-deepest lake: "The body of William Ptacek, 46, of Oakes, N.D., was found in Leech Lake Sunday. Ptacek was on a sailboat in the lake on Saturday when he apparently fell overboard..." (AP, 7/6/04) "A search was conducted until dark Saturday and continued Sunday with divers, side scan sonar and officers from Cass County and the Minnesota DNR." (AP, 6/5/04) "A 19-year-old Wisconsin man died of an apparent drowning last weekend on Leech Lake, Cass County authorities reported. The body of Jeremy G. Goss, 19, Mondovi, Wis., was found Sunday after a search began for the man and his boat on Leech Lake Saturday morning... Goss had been reported missing Saturday morning. His boat was located, partly swamped, near Submarine Island Saturday afternoon. His body was recovered Sunday." (Brainerd Dispatch, 9/17/02)

Your point is well taken, Aubs. And I agree with you -- the odds that Josh somehow fell into water somewhere on the campus are slim. What I do think is that Josh was taken -- and I do not believe it was a random act -- I think someone targeted him, and "lured" him. The only thing I can't figure out is why the tracking dogs didn't follow his scent to the point where he most likely was abducted. I do think he may have known his abductor, and that's why he went with them -- he may have even been caught by surprise and attacked. Someone out there knows exactly what happened. I think it's going to be by divine intervention and determined persistence and courage that the answer to what happened to Joshua will be found. Joshua, wherever you are, we won't give up -- ever

"Could Josh could have fallen into a small body of water, yet remain missing 20 months later after extensive searches by local dive teams and a definitive search by the elite Trident Foundation? ''A father and two sons from Chicago reported missing last month [washed up] on a Lake Michigan beach, their bodies bound together with rope and tied to bags filled with sand, police say... The amount of time the three were believed to be in the water was consistent with how long they had been missing - about six weeks... The [police] chief said the three were tied together with nylon rope, either through belt loops, a belt or around one child's waist. Also tied to the bodies were two nylon book bags, each containing personal belongings and two plastic bags filled with sand. 'One of the children also had pants pockets filled with sand, which had been zipped closed,' he said. This added 48 pounds of weight, he said.''   "Is St.John's by chance on this smuggling route?" It's my opinion that they are -- I did some research and found some disconcerting information in the history of St. John and its priests/monks. There are people who are aware of this history. But remember, the benefactor of this college, the Catholic church, is one of the wealthiest organizations in the world. This is the problem -- they have the financial resources and the power to protect their own -- including those who violate the law. Only the bravest and most determined of souls are willing to go up against them. I believe this case will only be solved by people who are absolutely determined to get to the bottom of it -- people who are smart enough to "outthink" those who put up barriers -- and who can figure out how to get to the truth, without risking their lives in the process
