5/1/04 Mark Message #1933
"(continued) ... His department, along with National Guard troops and divers, has searched hundreds of acres on the campus and several bodies of water. Guimond disappeared Nov. 9, 2002, after leaving an on-campus party. Guimond, from Maple Lake, would have graduated May 9 from St. John's. He was 20 when he disappeared. ... Sanner has said previously that searchers on horseback bogged down in wet, mucky areas during earlier searches for Guimond. Sanner also has said the most likely scenario is Guimond wandered away from the party and either fell into a body of water on campus or is in one of the low-lying swampy areas on campus. ... "

"Stearns County Sheriff John Sanner wants searchers on horseback at St. John's University to again look for missing student Josh Guimond. ... The spring thaw has Sanner hoping his Mounted Reserve unit will be able to search areas that previously weren't accessible because they were too wet. Sanner was unsure when the horses could be back on campus but that ''sooner is better than later.'' ... ''We're not reacting to anything new,'' Sanner said Friday. ''We're just trying to get deeper into the swampy and wet areas.'' ... "

The Associated Press reported this afternoon that Patty Wetterling is considering a run for Congress. No doubt Patty’s campaign will draw renewed attention to unsolved missing person cases in our district, including that of Josh. If Patty wins the race, cases such as Josh’s will likely receive increased scrutiny and additional government resources. According to the AP report, Patty "said she would focus on children's issues, but declined to be more specific. She also said she was not considering a run out of any sense of dissatisfaction" with the incumbent. Patty is "a national expert on child safety. She's credited with several state and national legislative accomplishments, including Minnesota's 1992 Sex Offender Registration Law. She also played a prominent role in establishing the Amber Alert system in Minnesota."

Why not have another search? I agree chances are slim that we would find anything but why not try. Do any of the students have a good enough relationship with the University to organize a search? It sounds like based on the recent Legal tactics that the University will not deal with the family but maybe they will submit to the wishes of the student body. It is so hard to keep Josh in the news because it is old news now. It seems like the only people who care are visiting this site. Maybe a search would give us some more pieces to the puzzle so we can find out what happened. I just want to find some answers for Lisa and Brian. Josh, I think of you every day, we are desperate for answers

4/25/04 Katie Message #1928
Mark...I don't think that's the most probable scenario. Of course, there's no way of knowing for sure. Josh has left parties before without saying anything to anyone, but the only place he ever went after doing that was home. If Josh was leaving to go to another party I think he would have told the guys he was with. He was also with his closest friends that night, and Josh was not the type of person to attend a gathering or party with people he didn't know very well. From what he told me that night, he was looking forward to spending the evening with the guys he was with. However, it's worth thinking about. If anyone knows of Josh making plans or if you made plans with Josh for the night of Novemeber 9th, please use the CONTACT US function on the webpage.

4/24/04 Mark Message #1927
I don't know if this theory has been argued, so forgive me if it has...Josh left the party without really saying anything to anyone, and only shortly after arriving, correct? Was this normal behavior for Josh? Isn't it possible that he had a planned rendezvous with someone and, for whatever reason, something went wrong? This theory would answer why Josh hasn't been found in the area, why nobody saw or heard anything, and why nobody knew he was leaving the party. Any thoughts on this?

The answers no doubt can be found on the campus -- but not in the water or the woods I'm afraid

Thanks for posting, atie5. I noticed this morning that 'ellia_lynn' posted a link to your site on the FindDru Message Board in the forum for "Other Missing Persons" under Jared Dion. BTW, 'Jules' created a posting for Josh there on Jan. 12, 2004 and it’s already had more than 1,000 views. I agree with you that Josh doesn’t fit the mold of the drowning victims; just for starters, those students were all found in relatively short order. Moreover, I’m not aware of any pedestrian ever drowning on the SJU campus, as some -- believe it or not -- still think happened to Josh. Also, there have been NO drownings at all in the past couple of decades (if ever?), except for one case a few years back when three non-student members of the public fishing from a canoe capsized in the dark without their life preservers. Apparently two of them couldn’t swim, and drowned. However, their bodies were quickly recovered.

"... another search ...?" The lakes would be the most plausible place to look, but the top experts have already cleared them. I've heard there's not a single instance ever where this outfit has made a mistake in "clearing" a body of water. Thus, the lakes are a dead end. As far as the woods and wetlands are concerned, none of the search dogs indicated that Josh may have strayed or gotten lost in the woods. Plus, there have been several organized searches already, including some assisted by National Guard troops, so it's unlikely that someone left Josh in the woods, as happened to Dru. The only kinds of searches that may not yet have been done are possibly those requiring search warrants -- in other words, they would need to be conducted by law enforcement agencies. I think the most productive thing that students, their parents, and other benefactors can do at this point is to remember Josh, contribute to his search fund, and demand candor and an honest search for answers.

Should we do another search on SJU campus and the surrounding area? The SJU area is huge, and it is possible that something got missed when we did the initial search. With the warmer weather maybe something will surface. It would be nice to do this while the student body is still on campus for a couple of reasons. It would serve a way to remember Josh during what would have been his graduation, and there would be more people to aid in a large scale search. This could also get Josh back in the media and get his face out there.

Josh, Just thinking about you and missing you so much. May 9th your class will graduate. It is so sad that you will not be there. Have been trying to contact the sheriffs dept to see if there has been any activity on your case. I am getting absolutely no response from anyone. As far as I know neither is your father. I am starting to question whether they are there to serve and protect. If you doubt them or question what they are doing they get upset and don't talk to you anymore. It would have been nice to do another search for you, but we can't look on campus and we don't have any idea where else to look. I love you and just want you home. Mom

The Catholic church has deep pockets -- deeper than what most people can afford to obtain justice. What does this have to do with this case?

"According to the Catholic Diocese of Cheyenne, Jablonowski was a priest in Wyoming for about 10 years. He was serving at a monastery in Ohio when the molestation charges surfaced, Laird said. ... Jablonowski, whose priestly faculties were revoked after the allegations surfaced, remained at the Platte County jail Sunday. It was unclear whether he would be transferred to a state corrections facility because of safety concerns, Laird said. ... "

"According to Alden, the men's genitals were manipulated to induce pain while they prayed. He could not be reached for comment Sunday. ... Laird said his client could not talk about the rituals, citing an oath of confidentiality concerning prayer and confession. ... The activities were not sexual, and were tied to a legitimate practice of penance and redemptive suffering, Laird said. Several people testified they found the prayers spiritual -- not sexual -- in nature. ... ''There are certain things that happen which are not sexual but could be interpreted that way,'' Laird said. ... "

He was 17 at the time. ... During an investigation, authorities learned that Jablonowski regularly took men to the church basement, asking them to strip naked before they were gagged, blindfolded and hung upside down from the ceiling, Platte County prosecutor Eric Alden told The Denver Post in Sunday's editions. ...   "CHEYENNE, Wyoming (AP) -- A priest accused of molesting a teenage boy has pleaded no contest in the case, but argues that he committed the acts in question for spiritual reasons and not sexual gratification, his lawyer said Sunday. ... Anthony Jablonowski, 69, was sentenced Thursday to between 15 months and seven years in prison for one count of taking indecent, immodest or immoral liberties with a minor, his attorney Dallas Laird said.   "I do agree that another search should be conducted maybe this spring of the campus. I have believed all along that the answers are on that campus and the person(s) who are involved are there also. They are big enough to have been involved with Josh's disapperance but not big enough to come forward with the information to bring my cousin home to our family. There is probably no way we will be able to do another search on the campus because they are so scard of what we would find related to Josh and probably other things that they have hidden also. ... Maybe we will get lucky and they will let us back on. We love you Josh. ... Marie"

I have observed plenty of other message boards on which information, including the name of potential suspects, has been discussed. How is it that this board is so restrictive, to the extent that open information really can't be shared? Seems like a few people have their back up in a big way, St. John's University being first and foremost. Well guess what, SJU -- this case is being discussed in detail in many other locales. Stop picking on the Guimond family! And forget about trying to intimidate or silence the rest of us. We're watching you

All good points you guys make. Dru's disappearance hit a nerve in her community. And yes, it certainly is a tragedy that some cases get more attention than others. I don't know why Josh's and Jacob's community doesn't demand more attention for their cases. How quickly people seem to forget. Meantime, two young men, full of hope and promise, are just gone, and there are no answers to be found. It does seem like young men are being targeted in that vicinity -- similar to the string of college kids "drowning" in the upper midwest. I will never stop praying and believing that someday we will know what happened to Joshua. I will never forget him

If Josh had been a woman there would have been more concern. If you read the posts on the finddru message board, you'll find a bunch of chivalrous guys trying to play the hero and as many caring, concerned women who can identify with Dru. Unfortunately for the missing, if you're the wrong color or gender, don't expect an awful lot of help. It's really a kind of travesty. But here's the awful irony: In this community young males such as Josh and Jacob seem to be most at risk. Is anyone aware of any missing girls or young women from this particular area? After all, there's a college for woman in this town and we know that "college co-eds" are a high-risk group with regard to victimization by sexual predators.

I don't know what that "mystery picture" is all about either -- I'm guessing it might have been found in Josh's possessions, perhaps on his computer? Don't know. Well, look at this investigation like this -- *what if* it involves getting cooperation from the university -- remember who subsidizes this school -- the Catholic church has a big bankroll, and will spend it if necessary in order to protect themselves. Not making any accusations here, just speculating why there has been no progress and we hear nothing

I don't understand this...why is there no activity happening in this case?? If you check out the Dru Sjodin site (finddru.com) you'll find thousands of posts, constant activity on the case, tips and leads, search updates, requests for volunteers, and on and on. Is NOTHING being done to find Josh?? The bottom line is: Josh will never be found if nobody is looking for him. And what is the deal with the mystery picture?

"Sanner said his staff is working with the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the University of St. John’s on a new development in theinvestigation. 'There are some things that we’re looking at that I can’t share with the media at this time,' he said. 'But there are some things that have come to our attention that deserve a closer look'" (Maple Lake Messenger, 6/25/2003). That was almost a year ago. So many of us care about Joshua -- and yet we're totally in the dark about whether the sheriff's dept has learned anything or is working on anything that might result in Joshua being found. It's very discouraging -- but of course, we will never give up -- never, ever ... so in case there's anyone reading this who might have been involved in Josh's disappearance, you better know there will be no end to this search -- ever

"According to Scott Romme, Trident Foundation Executive Director, the crew used sidescan sonar search techniques, using multiple directional passes to insure complete and overlapping coverage. And all three lakes [on campus] were cleared by the team. 'There were no targets identified that will require any additional search efforts on these lakes,' Romme said. 'There is never a guarantee that human remains could have been hidden or dumped in a body of water and are now hidden from the sidescan sonar technology. However, based on the reports from the field, I would recommend that the search for Josh head in another direction.... Efforts [by the Stearns County Sheriff’s Dept.] coupled with our technologies and efforts should provide a very high degree of reassurance to the family and the community that Josh is most probably somewhere else'" (Maple Lake Messenger, 5/21/2003).

4/12/04 Aubs Message #1895
Water is most dense at 39º F. When surface water reaches 39 degrees after ice-out in spring, it becomes heavier than the water immediately below it and therefore sinks. The downward movement of the surface layer forces water in the deeper parts of the lake upward. This circulation of water is called spring turnover. The April 12 mean temperature for Collegeville is 44º F. Thus, it can be assumed that spring turnover has already occurred. Note, however, that the lakes in question have already been cleared by the top experts in the nation. (Continued on next post, above)

4/12/04 Mark Message #1894
Well, Spring is once again upon us. Anyone aware of any planned efforts for another lake search? I don't live near enough to Collegeville/St. John's to know this, but is it legal for a private citizen to take a boat onto one of the lakes on campus? I've heard of such a thing as "lake turnover"...when approx does this happen? It's still unbelievable to think that (if Josh is in a body of water) that absolutely NOTHING has surfaced yet...not a shoe, piece of fabric, nothing.

"That would have made him approximately 63-68 years of age at the time of Josh's disappearance, which is fairly old for a violent sex offender" I know there are plenty of sex offenders in the 50's & 60s age range ... however, as you said, they don't seem to be in the violent category ... but let's say it was the same perpetrator -- if he was violent the first time, perhaps it would be natural for him to continue with what "worked" for him the first time. Further, perhaps he has also been involved in a series of other abductions in that area. I'm aware that some people think there is a serial killer who drowns his victims...

" Based on my analysis of Federal estimates, there are fewer than five unapprehended offenders of this description in the entire United States. What's the chances that 40% of them would operate in Lake Wobegon?" Well when you put it into that context, the chances would be slim. The thought occurs to me that a "public" figure (i.e. someone in any position of responsibility) would not have returned to the store to brag -- therefore, if the same suspect committed both crimes, it casts doubt that it would be someone from the abbey -- right?

4/11/04 Anonymous . . . . . Message #1891
"In your opinion, do you feel this perpetrator may have been involved in Joshua's disappearance, and ... might this person still be in the general vicinity?" Gosh, that a tough one. The person of interest in Jacob's disappearance was thought to be about 50-55 years of age in 1989. That would have made him approximately 63-68 years of age at the time of Josh's disappearance, which is fairly old for a violent sex offender. Are there any known sex offenders in this age range in the area? I don't know whether such a person would still be around, but it's more likely than the alternative: that ANOTHER violent sex offender who CONCEALS his MALE victims recently moved into the area. Based on my analysis of Federal estimates, there are fewer than five unapprehended offenders of this description in the entire United States. What's the chances that 40% of them would operate in Lake Wobegon?

"*If* they can somehow determine who the suspect(s) is!!" -- If you study reports of the abduction, it's evident that Jacob's abductor got close enough to the two boys to have left trace evidence on them, along with useful sensory information. Recent technological advances in forensic science makes it possible to answer questions they hadn't even thought of in 1989. Also, this type of offender likes to return to the scene of the crime to relive the thrill of the hunt. A recent report on KMSP Fox 9 suggests that the self-centered, egotistical idiot who took Jacob returned to the convenience store to gloat two weeks after his crime. Fortunately, the local college student working the shift at Tom Thumb got a pretty good ID on him.
