4/29/05 BMW Message #2516
"It is true that in a minority of cases, victims have been asked to sign 'gag orders.' The diocese agrees to settle a civil suit; it pays out a certain sum of money, and it stipulates that the victim will not publicly reveal what happened." ("The Catholic Church and Child Sexual Abuse" by Rev. Stephen J. Rossetti) ....... "The maneuvers to avoid criminal prosecution required (religious leaders) to divert the efforts of the family and the victim in favor of the perpetrator to avoid scandal and protect the church. This is a typical pattern." ("Sipe Report" by A. W. Richard Sipe)

4/29/05 BMW Message #2515
"Tom, do people who are treated at Southdown carry a criminal record for sex offenses?" Not necessarily. From "How a priest's past was hidden" by David O'Reilly, Philadelphia Inquirer, Apr. 21, 2002: "I thought the system would give us justice," Robert's mother said. But things did not play out as she expected. There was no trial. Months later, she learned that a deal had been struck. ... If he admitted molesting the boy and stayed out of trouble for a year, all record of his arrest would be erased. Father Connor was sent to Southdown Institute, a clinic on 100 acres of farmland near Toronto run by the Canadian Catholic Bishops Conference."

4/28/05 -- Message #2514
Tom, do people who are treated at Southdown carry a criminal record for sex offenses? In other words, just because they have been treated there doesn't mean they are registered as a sex offender or even have a record -- therefore -- this person is someone certain people may know to be dangerous, but the general public would not -- am I on track?

4/28/05 -- Message #2513
In your opinion, would the suspect photo made for the Wetterling abduction fit with the appearance of the perp in some or many of the victims you listed? If so, we are talking about someone older -- 60's or 70's age range?

4/28/05 -- Message #2512
What if these dots were connected -- a professor/religious figure who has been treated at the Southdown Institute in the past, who has a position in MN but travels to AZ for vacation/conferences? Is there something else I should be checking into in AZ?

4/28/05 -- Message #2511
" offender targets victims who have no prior relationship with him, making it impossible to establish a link. He has the opportunity, but no apparent motive (which exists only as a secret fantasy in his own mind)." Tom ... by "opportunity," are you saying it could still be someone who lives/works close to the victims. In other words, though the victims may not know him, he is in their prescence -- in a seemingly innoculous way. Tom, do you think the perp's vocation is in either academics or religion?

4/28/05 Anonymous Message #2510
"Where do victims disappear in the fall? Eastertime? Summer? Winter? What does this tell us about the victims' ultimate disposition, taking into account climatic factors?" I'm thinking out loud. In the fall, they disappear in MN while college is in session. In Easter, summer, winter -- the perp is on "break?" In Arizona? Damn -- is it a college professor -- one who is located in MN during the time school is in session -- and who sometimes travels to Arizona. One who murders during Easter/Spring break (possibly the cult/occult connection). Ultimate disposition -- either the dessert in AZ, or, perhaps the frigid lakes or snow of MN...what do you think, Tom?

4/28/05 BMW Message #2509
Don't put a high priority on Monduel - the sourcing is vague. Theoretically, it might be possible to connect one particular person with *some* of the names listed, but remember the offender targets victims who have no prior relationship with him, making it impossible to establish a link. He has the opportunity, but no apparent motive (which exists only as a secret fantasy in his own mind). For any dots possible to connect, either profession or leisure and travel habits may come into play. Generally, in each case the offender will have had a legitimate reason to be present at the scene of the abduction. Where do victims disappear in the fall? Eastertime? Summer? Winter? What does this tell us about the victims' ultimate disposition, taking into account climatic factors?

4/27/05 -- Message #2508
Hello Tom. Still looking for Jacob Montduel or Monduel (could there be a different spelling?) -- would he be a possible victim or someone else? Having trouble locating info on him. Next question: theoretically, might it be possible to connect one particular person with certain names you listed? Also, might it be possible to connect the dots with the perp's profession? Or am I veering off onto a wrong path (in your opinion)

4/26/05 -- Message #2506
Tom, I imagine you don't feel Ryan Katcher's disappearance is related to Josh's ... but perhaps Jacob Wetterling's is (?)

4/23/05 Aubs Message #2505
Indeed, --. That reminds me of the puzzling case of the missing 19-year-old Ryan Katcher, who bears a striking physical resemblance to Josh. The 5'6'', 160-lb., blond-haired, blue-eyed University of Illinois student disappeared at about 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 5, 2000 – two years almost to the day before Josh went missing, also in the early midnight hours on a Sunday morning. Visit Ryan's website at http://www.findryan.com for more information and a photo. Then compare it with the lower of the two photos on Josh's home page. But --, forget about your guy's conscience catching up with him. Sorry, no conscience. You're gonna have to smoke 'em out. Or maybe his mistakes will catch up with him.

4/23/05 -- Message #2504
Josh is such a handsome young man -- such warmth and intelligence in his eyes...why did this have to happen to him -- why does it have to happen to anyone. Don't worry, Joshua, we won't stop looking -- someone knows what happened to you, maybe their conscience will get to them before we finally put all the puzzle pieces together

4/22/05 -- Message #2501
Aubs, you are absolutely right. I am certainly not the least bit interested in engaging in any kind of "witch hunt." I am, however, very interested in finding out information and answers. It is challenging, to say the least, not being there to do my own observations. But, I have not allowed that to stop me in the past and will not this time either. I think it is a rare thing indeed for a person to simply vanish without a trace. Yes, it does happen -- but it is rare. Whatever happened to Joshua has an explanation -- and time is on my side.

"...don't focus on S. Roach. It was just an idea I threw out to Tom." Good. Let's not cast aspersions on the integrity of good men. That's the problem when the goats are pastured with the sheep. It touches the entire flock and vexes the spirit of the faithful.

"No one wants to touch this for some reason and I would bet it is not a good one." Bingo. I have always known this case would be solved by concerned private citizens who are not afraid to pursue every avenue. From what I can discern, there is a thread that weaves together the names in Tom's messages. It's like a puzzle for me to assemble-- Tom can see it clearly, I think, but I am guessing he is not in a position to pursue his ideas. That is where the rest of us come in. Aubs, don't focus on S. Roach. It was just an idea I threw out to Tom. Focus on the other names. I found information on all of them except for one, and there is at least one common theme among most of them. There's something else, though -- relating to the man who publishes books on the occult -- how does he factor into this

4/21/05 Aubs Message #2497
Josh's Mom: That's very disheartening. Did the sheriff and the BCA offer any reasons for refusing to enlist the help of the FBI? Who are the politicians you spoke with? Have you spoken with your own congressman, Rep. Mark Kennedy? He's an alum. One would expect him to take a special interest in Josh's plight. You say you have spoken with the attorney general. Are you referring to Mike Hatch? Who are the people who told you "there is nothing they can do"? '--': Between you and Tom, you seem to have 3 or 4 names that may or may not be of interest. I'm very concerned. Can you recommend any URLs to link to that provide pertinent background information on these individuals? I've never heard of Stanley Roach. Do you have a link for viewing his picture?

4/21/05 Mom Message #2496
For anyone who might be interested the family has asked the sheriff and the BCA to enlist the help of the FBI. This was refused by the Sheriff's department. Also we have talked politicians from both parties and worked our way up the political ladder and have been told by all, including the Attorney General that there is nothing they can do. No one wants to touch this for some reason and I would bet it is not a good one.

Mary was a sophomore at St. Francis High School when she was murdered. She and Susanne were two of six children in a devoutly Catholic family. ... Police have several suspect in the Reker girls' murders, including a now-elderly Benedictine priest who lived at an abby nearby and who has admitted to several sex assaults. He knew the Reker family and had taken Susanne and Mary and their siblings on overnight camping trips before.   Pursue the questions. What are the two potential tracks? How may they be mutually exclusive? "Was a subpoena duces tecum exercised at the Southdown outfit in Canada? What are the Reker Murders? What is the Trident Foundation? Who is Bruce Wemmerling? . Who is David E. Fredrickson? . Who is Carl Weschcke?" (Tom, 4/9/2004).

Thank you, Aubs. Tom, shall I continue pursuing the questions you posed? There seem to be two potential tracks to follow, and they may be mutually exclusive.

4/20/05 Aubs Message #2489
"When I queried the sheriff, his response was that ... Josh was in the river [actually wetlands], sunk deeply into the mud ... making it impossible for radar [sonar] detection to find him... What ... could be the reason for the current inertia?" It might only be seeming inertia. Maybe the offender has already been identified and investigators are still building a case. Considering that Josh's disappearance is likely linked to Jacob Wetterling's, recall this post a year ago from a KARE-11 TV news report on May 6, 2004: "There is a dramatic change of focus in the Jacob Wetterling case. Investigators are very confident they will finally solve it." ... "There are a few, very specific suspects, and those suspects know who they are, they know they are suspects." ... "Authorities may be on the verge of identifying the man who kidnapped Jacob Wetterling." I heard from a source in the Twin Cities that one suspect is a Wetterling neighbor and the other two live near the Guimond abduction site.

4/19/05 Aubs Message #2487
Regarding the seeming lack of zeal, I should note in fairness that the Stearns County Sheriff’s Department put a great deal of effort into the initial water search – second only to the search for Jacob Wetterling. The sheriff’s dive team has never failed to recover a drowning victim. That perfect record is still intact, because Josh is not in any of the lakes on campus. It’s time to look elsewhere. On May 21, 2003, the Maple Lake Messenger quoted Scott Romme, executive director of the Trident Foundation (the premier underwater search team in the United States) as saying, ''The Stearns County Sheriff’s Office has spent an exhaustive amount of time and resources in and around these bodies of water. Those efforts, coupled with our technologies and efforts should provide a very high degree of reassurance to the family and the community that Josh is most probably somewhere else.'' ... ''Based on the reports from the field, I would recommend that the search for Josh head in another direction.''

4/19/05 -- Message #2484
I am not a "conspiracy theorist," but ever since I began to study this case, one of the first things I felt was -- it's like no one wants to delve too deep into Josh's disappearance for fear of what they might find. And apparently, whatever it is they might fear, they do not wish to tangle with...

4/19/05 Aubs Message #2483
To request the resources of the U.S. Army Reserve's 367th Engineer Battalion, Josh's family could contact Sen. Mark Dayton, who was present at the send-off for the 367th Engineer Battalion in February 2004. They could also work with Rep. Mark Kennedy, Josh's congressman, who happens to be an SJU alum. However, the investigation should not be limited to a mud search. All possibilities should be investigated. The university could ask (or pressure, if necessary) the sheriff to request the help of the FBI, which has the best resources for investigating missing person cases. By law, the FBI cannot assist in the investigation unless invited by local law enforcement agencies. I can't recall a missing person case pursued with less enthusiasm or investigative vigor. It's not like we have a missing set of keys on campus. It's somebody's child we're talking about here. Search for the "needle in the haystack"!

4/19/05 -- Message #2482
One would think that the value of a missing college student's life would be worthy enough to justify such a search -- particularly if it could conclude the darkness surrounding this case once and for all. Further, your logic is keen --after all, if such a horrific fate could befall Josh, it could therefore happen to anyone, and I would think the university would not want to risk such a tragedy. Your suggestion makes complete sense, perhaps a petition is in order to demand action on this request. Though I was told, looking for remains would be like "searching for a needle in a haystack." Perhaps --but a search should be pursued nonetheless -- if this were a loved one of someone famous, would not such a search already have been done?

4/19/05 Aubs Message #2481
I suggest Josh's family ask the sheriff or the university to request the assistance of the U.S. Army Reserve's 367th Engineer Battalion, headquartered in St. Cloud and currently stationed at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan. The battalion commander is Lt. Col. Scott Anderson. The main purpose of the battalion's deployment is to detect and clear land mines. They have plenty of metal-detecting (watch, coins) and sonar-based (skeletal remains) equipment that can be used to find a victim mired in muck. The battalion will be back home by fall when wetlands are about as dry as they get. If it really is true (but how could it?) that "a person could sink so deeply in that stuff that they would never be found," university authorities, as suggested by another poster, should fence off danger zones or post warning signs to keep other students out of these hazardous areas.

4/18/05 Anonymous Message #2480
"but I did come to the realization, then, that this case would be solved by people other than the 'authorities'" -- That is perhaps the case. I can't think of any explanation for the silly theory of being stuck in the mud other than to give the authorities a rationalization to do nothing. Of course, if they really believed he was in the mud, they might try searching for him.

4/18/05 -- Message #2479
Because, in the words of one person in authority with whom I spoke: "a person could sink so deeply in that stuff that they would never be found." I understand that, however, I refuted their position by remarking that this doesn't seem to have happened to anyone else there before. I never believed this is what happened to Josh -- but I did come to the realization, then, that this case would be solved by people other than the "authorities" --

4/18/05 muckraker Message #2478
--, the deal about Josh sinking into mud somewhere on campus is a scam. Nobody with half a brain will believe it. If that was the case, the university would of fenced off the area and posted it to keep other students from coming to grief too. There's been enough lawsuits already to risk further liability. Plus, if they know he's in the mud why are'nt they trying to recover the remains?

4/18/05 -- Message #2477
"Carl Weschcke means something but if it's a dot I can't connect it. Maybe Tom can speak to that." The fact that Tom mentioned it leads me to believe there is a possible connection -- and if that were so, (and everyone please notice I am speaking in generalities here and making no accusations whatsoever) -- it would mean possibilities of a far darker nature. This is why I referred to "cults" in an earlier message. Also, you can still see a common theme that is woven into Tom's thread of names

4/18/05 -- Message #2476
What I would like to do, is find out whether a subpeona was issued to the Southdown Insititute -- and if so -- for whom. Then I would like to compare the features of that individual or individuals to those of the suspect named in the Wetterling case.

4/18/05 -- Message #2475
I believe he was most likely targeted --by someone who others would not suspect -- and whom Josh would not suspect. I imagine my theory does not surprise you. I do not have the advantage of being able to inspect certain individuals and compare their features to the suspect in the Wetterling case.

4/18/05 -- Message #2474
I also agree that the VanceHolmes website probably does not relate to Josh's case -- I just threw it out there to cover all the bases. No, I don't feel Josh was the random victim of a serial killer who preys on college age men. There are some who might subscribe to this theory, though.

4/18/05 -- Message #2473
The "muck" I referred to was meant literally, though my personal views lean towards the metaphor as well. The "officals" investigating this case stand by the theory, it seems, that Josh sunk into mud somewhere on the campus -- whether in a lake or in walking there. I do not now, nor have I ever, believed this, but this is what we have all been told.

4/17/05 Matt Message #2472
Sorry "--", I should have combined this with my previous message. It's cumbersome enought to navigate through the message board as it is. BTK Strangler was the compliance officer for his community near Wichita and worked closely with his community and local law enforcement. Everyone knew and trusted him, though they didn't necessarily like the brusque, meticulous, meddlesome loner. BTK was hiding in plain sight -- the killer next door, so to speak. Remember that in the search for Josh. Also remember that Josh didn't drown, so the vanceholmes website is not really relevant here. Always keep this in mind, my friend: You want to connect cases where the victim disappeared without a trace, never to be seen again, like Jacob Wetterling. This guy has an almost foolproof MO.

4/17/05 Matt Message #2471
"--": Yes, the name Carl Weschcke means something but if it's a dot I can't connect it. Maybe Tom can speak to that. Regarding the muck surrounding the campus, that would be dangerous, but it's not really true - or are you speaking in metaphor?

4/17/05 -- Message #2470
"I'm sure some of you researching Josh's case have already seen this website -- we know from the BTK Strangler that some serial killers can be clever enough to evade authorities for decades...or longer. In all my years where I have lived I have *never* seen this number of ''accidental'' drownings!! ... http://www.vanceholmes.com/court/trial_missing.html"

4/17/05 -- Message #2469
Tom...am I even on the right track, in your opinion?

4/17/05 -- Message #2468
On the surface, I think the authorities have set the plight of Johsua aside -- under the pretense that he somehow sunk in the "muck" that surround the SJU campus. I don't how they could feel so comfortable with that assumption, given that no other student in the history of St. John's has ever fallen pray to such a calamity. This is what leads me to mull over the idea of a cover up.

4/17/05 -- Message #2467
Thanks for the links, Matt. Does the name Carl Weschcke mean anything to you? It was the research into his background that made me consider possible "cult" involvement. I'm thinking there may be some kind link between the names referenced in one of the posts -- as I said, it's like connecting the dots and then following a trail ... and frankly, it's very disconcerting
