The "muck" I referred to was meant literally, though my personal views lean towards the metaphor as well. The "officals" investigating this case stand by the theory, it seems, that Josh sunk into mud somewhere on the campus -- whether in a lake or in walking there. I do not now, nor have I ever, believed this, but this is what we have all been told.
