I suggest Josh's family ask the sheriff or the university to request the assistance of the U.S. Army Reserve's 367th Engineer Battalion, headquartered in St. Cloud and currently stationed at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan. The battalion commander is Lt. Col. Scott Anderson. The main purpose of the battalion's deployment is to detect and clear land mines. They have plenty of metal-detecting (watch, coins) and sonar-based (skeletal remains) equipment that can be used to find a victim mired in muck. The battalion will be back home by fall when wetlands are about as dry as they get. If it really is true (but how could it?) that "a person could sink so deeply in that stuff that they would never be found," university authorities, as suggested by another poster, should fence off danger zones or post warning signs to keep other students out of these hazardous areas.
