On Friday night, January 13, 1989, a 12-year-old Cold Spring boy named Jared is walking home from a hockey game when he is grabbed by the shoulders, dragged into a car, driven to a remote location in nearby Richmond, and sexually assaulted before being released outside Cold Spring. Nine months later, Jacob Wetterling is abducted a little more than 10 miles away in St. Joseph. Then, 13 years later and about 6 miles distant in Collegeville, Josh Guimond disappears without a trace while walking alone on campus. All three incidents occurred after dark and on a weekend. It would be a stretch of the imagination to assert with any degree of confidence that these three cases are unrelated. What are the chances of two or three violent offenders targeting young males within a 10-mile radius in a thinly populated rural area, all apparently using a similar MO?
