It's possible that Alex -- anticipating that investigators might take a look at Josh's hard drive -- wanted to "help" his friend by making sure there was nothing embarrassing on Josh's computer. Of course, it's equally possible that a third party with access to Alex's password could have used it to take a peek. Whatever the case, one would expect law enforcement to investigate fully.
