Summary of 5/7/04 KARE 11 news report: "Today, hope is renewed ... For the first time in a long time, detectives working the Wetterling case are feverishly working the phones." More than two dozen new tips came into the Stearns County Sheriff’s Department on Friday. The tips "poured in." An investigator said the phone started ringing at 8 o’clock in the morning. He told KARE 11, "A lot of people calling in are giving names on the composite – on who they feel resembles the composite." He added, "A lot of people are giving us information on things that have happened to them in the past. We’re getting information on stuff that people say happened to them (as far back as) the late 1960s." The reporter characterized the mood at the sheriff’s office as "ecstatic." Investigators told KARE 11 that many of the tip callers were sexual assault victims who gave specific names of their perpetrators. (This was KARE’s top story, so I expect tips and leads will continue pouring in today.)
