There's nothing within walking distance of campus -- only other campus buildings and an interstate highway. The nearest town (St. Joseph, where Jacob Wetterling was abducted) is about 5 miles away. Most students would give directions or render assistance to someone approaching them at night on campus asking for help. Who wouldn't? Earlier the night Josh disappeared another student was approached near the Stephen B. Humphrey Auditorium by someone in a late-model SUV with Nebraska plates, who struck up a conversation with the student.
